From Heartbreak to Hope: A Family Restored

"Healing doesn't just change one life—it can change the course of an entire family."

When Brooklyn first came to Genuine Health Alliance, she was carrying the weight of overwhelming grief, trauma, depression, and uncertainty. Her world had been turned upside down as she navigated the emotional impact of family struggles while desperately fighting to provide a safe and loving home for her young niece, who had entered foster care through the Georgia Division of Family & Children Services (DFCS).

The journey was anything but easy.

Over the course of many months, we worked together through the emotional pain, fear, and exhaustion that often accompany child welfare cases. Therapy became a place where Brooklyn could process her grief, strengthen her resilience, develop healthy coping skills, and remain focused on the future she envisioned for herself and her niece.

Our work extended beyond the therapy office. As her therapist, I had the privilege of supporting her throughout the legal process, including attending court hearings as an advocate for her emotional progress and commitment to providing a stable, nurturing home.

After months of perseverance, countless prayers, and unwavering determination, Brooklyn's dream became reality.

She was granted the right to adopt her niece.

Today, what was once a story marked by trauma has become a story of restoration, hope, and new beginnings. A little girl who faced uncertainty now has the security of a permanent family, and a young woman who once questioned whether she could carry the burden now proudly embraces the title of mother.

This is why Genuine Health Alliance exists.

We believe healing involves more than reducing symptoms. It means strengthening families, restoring hope, empowering caregivers, and helping individuals overcome life's greatest challenges so they can build healthier futures for themselves and those they love.

Sometimes therapy changes a person.

Sometimes it changes an entire family.

2011 Mercer on Mission Trip to Malawi, Africa

A Journey That Shaped My Heart for Service

In 2011, while pursuing my graduate studies at Mercer University, I had the privilege of participating in Mercer on Mission, a three-week international service-learning experience in Malawi, Africa. Alongside two professors and fellow students, I traveled to the city of Zomba to work alongside local communities, learning firsthand how sustainable service, cultural humility, and collaboration can transform lives. Mercer on Mission combines academic learning with meaningful service and spiritual reflection, creating an experience that leaves a lifelong impact on every participant. From this experience, I created a newsletter as my final course project. I submit to you photos from the experience along with the newsletter. Together, they capture a journey that continues to inspire my commitment to serving others both locally and globally.

Although I have served communities throughout my professional career, nothing prepared me for the lessons I would learn in Malawi. The people I met possessed incredible resilience, generosity, and joy despite limited resources. Their strength challenged my perspective and deepened my understanding that true service begins with listening, learning, and working alongside communities rather than simply serving them.

During our mission, we participated in several community projects, including supporting an orphanage and infirmary, helping install a solar-powered water system to improve access to clean drinking water, planting indigenous trees to promote environmental sustainability, and learning from local leaders who were creating long-term solutions for their communities. These experiences reinforced the importance of addressing both immediate needs and the underlying conditions that allow people and communities to flourish.

Looking back, I recognize that this experience profoundly influenced the leader I would become. It strengthened my commitment to service, reinforced my faith that every person deserves dignity and opportunity, and inspired me to pursue work that restores hope to individuals, families, and communities.

Today, that same philosophy guides Genuine Health Alliance. Whether providing trauma-informed therapy, supporting children and families involved with foster care, teaching parenting skills, or developing future programs for youth aging out of care, our mission remains the same: to meet people where they are, build meaningful relationships, and help create pathways toward healing, stability, and hope.

The work I do today is rooted in a lesson I first learned in Malawi: lasting change happens when compassion is combined with action.
